Introduction
The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists (RANZCR) governs and administers the five-year specialist medical postgraduate training in Australia.
- Phase 1 (3 years): General radiology training
- Phase 2 (2 years): Systems-focused rotations for advanced radiology training.
The 2021 clinical year commences on 1st February 2021 and concludes on 30th January 2022.
Network Training Positions
To commence radiology training in NSW, you must apply for a trainee (accredited registrar) position within a Local Area Network (LAN), of which there are 3 (known as LAN 1, LAN 2 and LAN 3). A LAN consists of a group of accredited training sites which trainees rotate within but predominantly train at one home hospital. All LAN trainees positions are RANZCR accredited.
Trainees spend no more than four years at any single training site within their five training program.
Each LAN will include at least;
- one private rotation (community private practice, private group practice within a public hospital, private hospital);
- one regional or remote rotation (a rotation may qualify as both private and rural).
The application process for network training is different to unaccredited registrar/trainee positions and senior resident medical officer (SRMO) positions in related fields such as interventional radiology or nuclear medicine/PET where candidates apply directly to the hospital advertising the position.
Eligibility
The minimum eligibility requirements for application to a trainee position are:
- Holds a Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) or equivalent medical degree.
- Current general registration with the Medical Board of Australia.
- Have at least 2 years of post-graduate experience (i.e. you can apply in your post-graduate year (PGY) 2 for commencement of training in PGY 3).
Contract
Generally, trainee contracts comprise a two year then a three year contract to fulfil the five years of RANZCR training. However, the length of contract will depend on which training year the trainee is applying for, as follows:
- Year 1 – contract is 2 years
- Year 2 – contract is 1 year
Trainees progressing from Year 2 to Year 3 must re-apply for a position at a training site (e.g. their home hospital).
- Year 3 – contract is 3 years
- Year 4 – contract is 2 years
- Year 5 – contract is 1 year

Application Process
Step 1.
Application for radiology trainee positions occurs via the annual JMO recruitment campaign with all jobs advertised on the NSW Health JMO eRecruit website.
Jobs advertisements are released on the 23rd July 2020 and close on the 16th August 2020 at 5pm.
Step 2.
Interview offers are typically e-mailed to candidates in the 1 – 2 weeks prior to the interview date. Candidates are able to formally accept the interview and select an interview time through the JMO eRecruit website. Selection of the interview time is made on a first-come-first-serve basis. In some cases, an interview time may be allocated to you without option.
If you are offered an interview for more than one LAN, you must complete a preference form which is then submitted to HETI for the matching process.

Prior to or after your interview, you must preference within the LAN that you interview for, which home hospital you prefer to predominantly train at.
Step 4.

FAQs
There is none. The matching process that HETI employs is based on a candidate’s true preferencing and on merit.
Scenario: You interview at both LAN 1 and LAN 2. You prefer to train at LAN 1 but you feel you performed stronger in the LAN 2 interview. You wonder whether to preference LAN 2 first as to not jeopardise any chances of scoring a trainee position.
Preference according to your true preference (i.e. LAN 1 first). Even if you qualify for a LAN 2 trainee position but ranked the network second, you will still be offered the position.
