RANZCR Proposes Fellowship Level Post-Nominals for Interventional Radiology and Interventional Neuroradiology

The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists (RANZCR) has released a proposal to establish Fellowship level post-nominals for specialists in interventional radiology (IR) and interventional neuroradiology (INR). This initiative aims to formalise and recognise the advanced training and expertise of radiologists in these growing fields.

Background

Currently, radiologists pursuing additional training in IR or INR often complete unaccredited fellowships lasting between 12 to 24 months, which do not confer any recognised qualifications or post-nominals. The European Board of Interventional Radiology (EBIR) provides certification for interventional radiologists, but it is not mandatory, nor does it offer an Australian or New Zealand-specific qualification. Similarly, interventional neuroradiologists can seek recognition through the Conjoint Committee for Recognition of Training for Interventional Neuroradiology (CCINR), but this is also not mandatory and does not confer an accredited qualification recognised by national regulatory bodies.

RANZCR states they are committed to seeking formal recognition of IR and INR as radiological specialties with regulatory bodies in both Australia and New Zealand. Their proposal outlines the development of advanced training programs and the introduction of specialist post-nominals to formally acknowledge radiologists who complete these programs.

Proposal Details

The key elements of the proposal include:

  1. Recognition of Training Programs: Establishment of formal Fellowship programs for IR and INR, with successful completion granting the use of specialist post-nominals endorsed by RANZCR.
  2. Grandparenting Pathway: Radiologists currently practising in IR and INR who meet specific criteria can apply for recognition as specialists, allowing them to use the new post-nominals.
  3. New Post-Nominals:
    • FIR: Fellow in Interventional Radiology
    • FINR: Fellow in Interventional Neuroradiology

Radiologists who complete both IR and INR training programs may be eligible to use both FIR and FINR post-nominals, acknowledging dual expertise in these fields.

Grandparenting Pathway Criteria

The grandparenting pathway allows current practitioners to gain recognition based on their experience and training. Criteria include holding medical registration, being a current fellow of RANZCR, and having completed relevant training or fellowship in IR or INR. Applicants must also provide evidence of their clinical competence and contribution to the field.

Future Implications

The introduction of these post-nominals aims to enhance the recognition and professional standing of interventional radiologists and neuroradiologists within the healthcare system. It will support the advancement of these specialties and ensure that patients receive care from highly trained and certified specialists.

Consultation Process

RANZCR is currently seeking member consultation on the proposed post-nominals and grandparenting pathways. Members are encouraged to provide feedback to help shape the final implementation of these initiatives.

This proposal represents a significant step forward in recognising the expertise and contributions of interventional radiologists and neuroradiologists, ensuring they receive the acknowledgment they deserve for their specialised skills and dedication to patient care.
