    Hi all!

I’m a new user of this website. I’m a second year MD student at USyd and quite keen to start building a CV for radiology training. I’m quite keen on getting involved with some radiology research but have not found many listings from USyd.

I am just wondering what type of research project opportunities you would typically look out for, and where to get access to those opportunities (especially ones suitable for students)? I’m based at the Concord Clinical School but I don’t really know who I should approach to enquire.

    Hey @wilsontao welcome 🙂

You’re right about there being few radiology research opportunities and even fewer academic radiologists.

Having spoken to some Directors of Training and a few registrars on the program, having “some research” in radiology is what they’re looking for, i.e. I don’t think having a PhD or Masters by research is necessary.

As a medical student, you could start by doing some case studies or pictorial reviews. This could be done anywhere as radiologists often keep a record of noteworthy cases but don’t always have the time to publish them. I would suggest approaching the DoT to express your interest, even if it means they direct you to someone else.

Alternatively, if there is a research component embedded in your degree, you could explore doing a larger project with the department when the time comes (some uni’s don’t like their students starting their research projects early, let alone starting higher research degrees)

Hi @wilsontao, great to hear you are interested in radiology training and research.

I agree with Alvin about case reports as a great starting point, as these are relatively small projects and a good way to get your eye in for clinical imaging terminology and report writing. Longer projects will often require more commitment and sometimes geographic proximity.

Once on the RANZCR program, Project 1 is typically an audit or systems improvement project and Project 2 is generally a peer-reviewed publication or conference presentation – trainees can always do with an extra set of hands on these.

Specific to your situation, Concord’s radiology department is an academic powerhouse relative to their small department size and will probably have several projects going which could have student input. If you would like I we can have a conversation in DMs regarding specifics.

At this stage, research is not a “must have” for getting on the program in NSW, but it is certainly a great way to show interest, network and have an opportunity to explore the specialty. Hope this is helpful!
